In this blog from Vibrant Square Dental, we explain dental erosion.
What Is Dental Erosion?
Dental erosion can happen to anyone of any age. Wearing down of teeth is a natural part of the aging process, but it can become more severe when it happens too quickly or too extensively. This can lead to issues with appearance, sensitivity, and function. Dental erosion is the loss of tooth enamel due to acid exposure that does not come from oral bacteria. Another name for this is teeth demineralization.
What Causes Dental Erosion?
Demineralization of teeth leads to a gradual and irreversible decrease in the quantity of minerals in the teeth, which can be caused by both internal and external factors.
- Intrinsic Erosion. Intrinsic erosion is caused by the frequent exposure of the teeth to stomach acids that are more intense, frequent, and/or prolonged than saliva can neutralize. GERD is a common condition in which the contents of the stomach reflux back up into the esophagus and/or the mouth, and heartburn and/or acid regurgitation are two common symptoms. Excessive vomiting, such as in people with bulimia nervosa or chronic alcoholism, can also expose the teeth to stomach acid. Pregnant women rarely experience this type of erosion.
- Extrinsic Erosion. Excessive exposure to acids can cause erosion of teeth due to external factors. This could be the result of a combination of dietary habits, lifestyle, environmental conditions, and occupational hazards. Consuming acidic fruits and beverages, along with a dry mouth and dehydration from intense physical exercise, can increase the risk of erosion.
- Other factors. Exposure to chlorinated swimming pool water is a potential source of erosive acids. Swimmers may experience dental erosion as a result of this exposure. Additionally, workers in battery plants, pickling operations, and mines may suffer from erosion due to contact with acidic fumes.
What Are Common Symptoms Of Teeth Erosion?
Dental erosion can often be first experienced as a toothache or discomfort when consuming hot or cold foods and drinks. Common signs of this condition include tooth pain and sensitivity, yellowing of teeth, increased transparency, small cracks and indentations, and an overall change in the look of the teeth.
What Treatment Options Are Available For Dental Erosion?
Treating existing tooth erosion depends on its cause. If GERD is the source of your teeth’s demineralization, then you should see a doctor for help. When it comes to dental care, people usually visit their dentist if they have a toothache or a chipped tooth. The dentist will assess the damage, figure out what caused it, and decide how to best address the decay. Potential treatments include filling minor enamel erosion and decay, applying crowns to areas too large for a filling, using dental bonding to protect multiple teeth, or using veneers for more permanent protection of all teeth.
