In this guide from Vibrant Square Dental, we review how to properly brush and floss your teeth so you can keep your smile healthy from the comfort of your home.
The Importance Of Brushing And Flossing
Did you know the main cause of tooth and gum disease is plaque buildup? Plaque is a sticky mixture of sugar, protein, and mucus which gradually builds up on the surface of your teeth. It forms when sugary or starchy carbohydrates, especially sucrose, are consumed. Bacteria then feed off of the plaque, producing acidic waste products that can damage teeth. In as little as 30 hours, enough bacteria can accumulate to cause inflammation of the gums.
What Essential Preventative Roles Do Brushing And Flossing Play?
- Prevents tooth decay and tooth loss. Losing teeth can be a complicated process to treat, but it can be prevented easily. Decay is caused when the acids in plaque eat away the enamel that protects our teeth. Taking proper care of your mouth through good oral hygiene is key to preventing this from happening.
- Prevents gum disease. Brushing and flossing regularly can help ward off gum disease, a serious and progressive condition that can lead to tooth loss, receding gums, and a receding jawbone. It is caused by the toxins found in plaque and can cause other health issues within the body. Taking the time to brush and floss can help prevent periodontal issues.
- Helps fight halitosis. Brushing and flossing can help fight bad breath, also known as halitosis, which is often caused by food particles that remain on or between the teeth. Regular brushing and flossing can remove these particles, resulting in a healthier mouth and fresher breath.
- Prevents permanent teeth staining. Additionally, brushing and flossing can help prevent teeth staining. Such staining can be caused by things such as smoking, drinking coffee, and drinking tea, but the more often these agents of staining are removed from the teeth through brushing and flossing, the less likely it is that the stains will become permanent.
The Best Way To Brush Your Teeth
Start off by brushing the outside of your teeth slowly and carefully. Start with the top teeth, then move to the bottom, taking it one tooth at a time to make sure that you don’t miss any spots. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and brush along the gum line to remove any plaque or food particles stuck in the gums. Use short strokes to cover the entire width of the tooth.
Remember to brush the inside surfaces of your teeth too! Even though they may not be as visible, they still need to be taken care of. Use a 45-degree angle when brushing and make sure to brush back and forth along the inside of your teeth. Don’t forget to brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth, using short, back and forth strokes to clean the tops of your back teeth. These are prone to trapping food.
Finally, don’t forget to brush your tongue. Doing this helps remove odor-causing bacteria and fungi.
The Best Way To Floss Your Teeth
Flossing is an excellent way to remove plaque that accumulates between teeth. It is especially vital for preventing gum disease and ensuring the pockets around the gums do not get too deep. Even with good brushing habits, a toothbrush cannot reach these areas, so it is imperative to use floss every day to clean them.
Start by cutting a piece of floss that is approximately 18 inches long. Tie one end around the middle finger of your left hand and the other end around the middle finger of your right hand, leaving a space of 2-3 inches between the two hands. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and up to the gum line.
Form a C-shape with the floss around each tooth and carefully slide it underneath the gum line. Gently move the floss up and down several times to get rid of anything stuck between the teeth. Do not thrust the floss in and out between the teeth, as this could irritate and injure the gums.
