We are glad to share a special offer for our young patients that participate in contact sports.

Sports guards (also called mouth guards) or athletic mouth protectors are crucial pieces of equipment for any child participating in potentially injurious sports.  Hockey, basketball and baseball tend to be the most injury prone. Fitting snugly over the upper teeth, mouth guards protect the entire oral region from injury, preserving both the esthetic appearance and the health of the smile.

How does mouth guard protect my child?

The majority of sporting organizations now require that participants routinely wear mouth guards.  Though mouth guards are primarily designed to protect the teeth, they can also vastly reduce the degree of force transmitted from a trauma impact point (jaw) to the central nervous system (base of the brain).  In this way, mouth guards help minimize the risk of traumatic brain injury, which is especially important for younger children.

Mouth guards also reduce the prevalence of the following injuries:

  • Cheek lesions

  • Concussions

  • Gum and soft tissue injuries

  • Jawbone fractures

  • Lip lesions

  • Neck injuries

  • Tongue lesions

  • Tooth fractures

Custom mouth guards are orthdontically correct and offer the highest level of protection of your child’s smile.

At Vibrant Square Dental we have a special offer on custom sports guards for teams, where a team of 10 or more receives the sports guards for $50 each.  Call us today at 905-553-3004, and we will guide you through the process of ordering your child’s team sports guards.

We'd like to share a a quick and handy chart that will tell you an aproximate time you should expect your baby's teeth to erupt.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends the assessment of infants, by a dentist, within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or by one year of age.

Here are 3 reasons to take your child for early dental exam:

  • You can find out if the cleaning you do at home is working.

  • Your dentist can find problems right away and fix them.

  • Your child can learn that going to the dentist helps prevent problems.

Is your baby due for their first dental visit?

Our clinic accepts new patients of every age, babies included. We have built this new practice with our littlest patients’ health and comfort in mind. In the office you will find we are using the latest, cutting edge technology, like syringe-less anesthesia, we operate in surgically clean air to help prevention of any bio or viral disease transmission, we use digital X-ray emitting much less radiation than traditional machines, we also use intra-oral cameras, so that our patients can see what we see while deciding on a treatment plan.

Teaching a toddler to brush correctly for 2 minutes in the morning and at night is a challenging task, since this is also the time of testing all the limits and exploring independence. Here are a few tips that might help you with the process:

  1. Lead by example – brush teeth together with your toddler.

  2.  Ask for your turn to lead their hand with a toothbrush in their mouth.

  3. Make sure your toddler can see what you or he/she is doing in the mirror. If your mirror is too high – place a small one on the sink level.

  4. Make teeth brushing a game: you are chasing octopuses out of the mouth and releasing them to freedom to the ocean (Nemo-style).

  5. Sing a special brushing song – it will help stretch the brushing sessions out, eventually reaching 2 minutes per brushing, recommended.

  6. Introduce an electric brush, since it can brush thoroughly quicker, and many times has a built-in timer. If the toddler is accepting of the toothbrush, tell him/her – until the brush says “stop”.

At Vibrant Square Dental we follow the recommendation of Canadian Dental Association and advise brinning your infant for their first checkup by 12 months of age or within 6 month of their 1st tooth erruption.

  1. As early as it becomes possible start wiping your baby’s gums with damp, clean washcloth, especially after feedings. This will stimulate the gums, wipe off bacteria building on teeth and will introduce your baby to the process and feeling of brushing.

  2. Once the 1st tooth appeared, transition to a finger brush with a small, rice size amount of safe to swallow, fluoride free toothpaste (4).

  3. Gradually introduce a full size kids’ toothbrush to the child, continue to brush with fluoride free, safe to swallow toothpaste. Our toddler brushing giude will come in handy at this point.

  4. Use safe to swallow training toothpaste until your toddler learns not to swallow the paste as well as to thoroughly rinse her/his mouth. Switching to fluoride toothpaste would than be a safe option.
